C-USA, College of Mass Communication team up for volleyball championship broadcasts
Over 50 students involved in production of 10 conference championship matches

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The 2013 Conference USA Volleyball Championship showcased more than just the top teams and players in C-USA at Alumni Memorial Gym this weekend.
The four-day, 12-team event was also an opportunity to give fans around Conference USA a look at broadcasts put together by Middle Tennessee's College of Mass Communication. A team of students, under the direction of Professor Robert Gordon, produced and broadcast the first 10 matches of the Conference USA Volleyball Championship on the C-USA Digital Network.
The weekend of broadcasts was nothing new to the students, who have produced 27 volleyball and women's soccer matches on the Middle Tennessee campus throughout the fall.
"I couldn't be more proud of the hard work and dedication invested by the students and the opportunity offered by Middle Tennessee," Gordon said. "We produced these events the same way a broadcast network would and it shows. This has been invaluable experience for the students and will be a great addition to their portfolio. We are also happy that the productions benefited the hard work of the teams."
The productions for the Conference USA Volleyball Championship involved 56 students and an eight-camera shoot at Alumni Memorial Gym, orchestrated from the university's on-site Mobile Production Lab. In addition, the College of Mass Communication utilized an on-campus studio for the production and broadcast of an intermission report that aired between the second and third set of each match.
CBS Sports Network produced and broadcast Sunday's championship match, but not without the help and involvement of College of Mass Communication students, who put together highlights from the early rounds of the weekend. Some of those students had the opportunity to shadow their professional counterparts on Sunday, gaining more real-world lessons in addition to the hands-on experience both in class and on-site for the productions.
In addition, once many of the students were done with their duties for the Conference USA Volleyball Championship on Saturday, they moved next door to Murphy Center for Sunday's production of the Blue Raiders' women's basketball game vs. nationally-ranked Kentucky.
Middle Tennessee athletics looks forward to continuing its successful partnership for students to broadcast more sporting events, and to continue giving students opportunities for hands-on experience at Blue Raider athletic events throughout the winter season and beyond.
